With love and affection, we need to organize, …but also acknowledge some of our bigger mistakes too. Our way of organizing data has been by “category”, like “steel factories” or “entertainment” or “jobs”, which removes things from their own functional relationships, so people can rearrange their meaning the way we like. We’ve been thinking about some of the big issues of sustainability somewhat like organizing the books in a library by color.
The link is to one of dramatically large error this causes, discovered in the principles of sustainability taught us by our “expert” category makers. It means our main way of slowing down our increasing impacts on the earth is rapidly speeding them up.
